A thyroid that isn’t functioning properly can cause you person a whole host of problems! These include weight gain, cold hands or feet, low body temperature, feeling chilly all the time, headaches, loss of sleep, dry skin, puffy eyes, loss of hair, nails that break easily, loss of mental sharpness, dizziness, ringing in the ears (or tinnitus), achy joints, constipation, frequent infections and/or loss of libido.

Most sources would agree that diet plays a big role in the health of your thyroid. You know, being high tech is great…I love technology…except when it comes to the foods we eat. The more high tech we get, the more we add highly processed foods, refined sugars and grains to regular diet. Processed foods take such a toll on the thyroid gland; it simply wasn’t designed to use them efficiently. The bad thing is that processed foods are cheaper and even though short term that sounds pretty good, the ironic part is that consuming them will only end up costing you more in the long run by spending your cash to take care of health problems that eating those cheaper foods caused!

There has been so much hoopla over the last few decades about what kinds of oils are best for you that it is hard to form an opinion. Who do you believe? I’ll tell you who I don’t believe and that is the pharmaceutical companies (ka-ching, ka-ching…greed…they are only in it for the money). I also don’t believe many of the food manufacturers because they stand to gain a lot in the pocketbook from pumping out these cheap yet attractive foods just chock full of harmful ingredients. You think they give a flip about my health or yours? Please think hard about that question. It’s all about money and greed.

Many types of oils can negatively affect the health of your thyroid. You know all the places we commonly use them in today’s world. We use them to cook with at home and soybean oil in particular is used daily in fast food places and restaurants. I remember my mom buying margarine instead of butter because it was polyunsaturated. The media had her believing wholeheartedly that margarine was better for her family’s health! Why, it is hard to believe otherwise when tv advertisements, magazines and the news bombard you with lies. Finally things are coming full circle and slowly we are hearing more positive things about butter, about the humble yet perfect egg and a whole host of other natural products that never were bad for us to begin with. Coconut oil is one of those products.
